Digital vs. Virtual!

These projects were produced in the last month of ECE 4760 class at Cornell University. The students were given the responsibility of choosing their project, then designing and building it. This year by coincidence there were two teams that built Saxophone Synthesizers! Which Saxophone has a better design?

Brian Wang: Digital Saxophone (The digital saxophone consists of a microphone to sense the user blowing into a mouthpiece, push-buttons to control the note to be played, and the Atmel644 Micro-Controller which processes the inputs and produces the digital output that sounds like a saxophone.)

Chris Piccoli & Suryansh Agarwal: The Virtual Saxophone.(Virtual Saxophone uses Direct Digitial Synthesis (DDS) to synthesize the output notes. Pushbuttons are connected to a PVC pipe to mimic the saxophone's mechanical structure, and a microphone that detects noise is used to determine whether or not the user is blowing into the device.)
