DIGITAL MICROSCOPE

The Saelig SAE106S Digital Microscope is a versatile tool designed specifically for PCB inspection, but it can also be useful in other fields. It can be used as a stand-alone device with its built-in 4.3” color LCD screen, or be connected to a PC. Illumination is enhanced by an eight LED adjustable ring light, with two additional repositionable side lights. The SAE106S offers 10x-220x magnification for seeing the smallest blemish or trace problem, and can store images and videos on an SD card or be transferred to a Windows PC. The SAE106S includes the following standard features:

  • 4.3 inch full HD color LCD screen. 10x-220x continuous magnification.
  • High quality optics for stunning 1080P images.
  • High quality precision-adjustable stand changes the distance between the camera and the object and its magnification.
  • Precision focusing range 2 cm-9.5 cm (0.8”–3.75”) from the test object — perfect for soldering activities.
  • UV filter provided protects the lens and reduces reflections and stray light.
  • Eight LED ring illumination with adjustable intensity control allows setting optimal illumination levels.
  • Two arm-mounted fill lights on either side can be moved freely, and their brightness can be adjusted by a dimmer switch.

The SAE106S also includes the following Saelig-exclusive additions:

  • Large 7.75” x 8” non-conducting ABS plastic base.
  • 16 GB micro-SD memory card for storing images and video.
  • Micro-SD USB card reader.
  • Updated user guide.

Visual inspection is the first tool in PCB debugging. Searching for missing or charred components, bad solder joints, and solder bridges is the first order of business when a bad board comes in for repair. Look for solder bridges or solder whiskers between pads and solder joints — especially between the pins of fine-pitch SMD chips (but note that adjacent ground pins will often be bridged by design). If the problem is a short, there may be burned spots on the printed circuit board. They can be quite small, but the normal green solder mask may be significantly discolored and visible under magnification.

Features include:

  • 1x Desktop digital microscope
  • 1x Stand
  • 1x USB cable
  • 1x USB 3.0 SD card reader
  • 1x SD card
  • 1x UV filter
  • 1x ABS baseplate
  • 1x User manual

The regular retail price is $199.99. However, the microcope is currently on sale for $189.

MULTI-CHANNEL TRANSCEIVER

The VX2M, also available from Lemos International, is a 400 MHz band transceiver conforming to the Radiometrix TR2M pinout. It uses a sophisticated combination of techniques to produce a very robust device with excellent resistance to vibration. It meets the ETSI Category 1 high performance receiver specification to be used where the operation of an SRD may have inherent safety of human life implications. It retains all the pin-functions of the parent TR2M (including noise operated squelch/carrier detect and separate digital/analog inputs and outputs). It also supports the same internal i1200 modem as the TR2M.

Features and applications include:

  • Conforms to EN 300 220-3 and EN 301 489-3
  • ETSI EN 300 220-1 Category 1 high performance level receiver
  • Any 3 MHz band module from 400 MHz to 475 MHz available as factory tuned custom variant
  • High performance double superhet, 128 channel PLL synthesizer with TCXO

8 MM REX PINION GEARS

If your build is going to take a beating, consider the 8 mm REX pinion gears now available from goBILDA. These gears are constructed of hardened steel and mount with two set screws for excellent hold on 8 mm REX shafting. Pricing for the 8 mm REX pinion gears is $6.99 in 20T, 24T, and 30T.

5 MM HTD TIMING BELTS

The 5 mm HTD timing belts also available from goBILDA are prime for large scale projects which encounter heavy torque loads. With a taller tooth profile and larger pitch when compared to 3 mm HTD, these new belts and pulleys transfer torque with less chance of slipping, skipping, or breaking. The 5 mm pitch timing belts are constructed of neoprene and have fiberglass cords to nearly eliminate stretching. The more coarse pitch (when compared to goBILDA’s 3 mm HTD belt) provides the ability to handle higher torque loads without slipping or skipping teeth. Pricing starts at around $4-$5.
